Il villaggio degli indiani - Indian village

Oggi sotto una pioggia continua e inclemente abbiamo fatto circa 200 km verso Nord in mezzo al nulla, con decine di chilometri tra foreste di conifere senza incontrare una macchina, per arrivare a Port McNeill (costa Nord dell' isola di Vancouver) e prendere un traghettino per il villaggio indiano di Alert Bay, sull' Isola dei Cormorani: sembrava di essere ai confini del mondo.

Il villaggetto è tutto abitato e gestito da indiani del gruppo Kwakwaka'wakw (pressoché impronunciabile), che d' estate organizzano anche eventi tradizionali e stupende danze rituali, ma in questo periodo dell' anno si limitano a gestire un piccolo (ma gradevole) museo e negozi di prima necessità, come un supermercato con annesso un angolo caffè/bar, dove alcuni locali passano mezze giornate chiacchierando, bevendo caffè e mangiando sandwich e patatine.

Bello un sito di sepoltura con vari totem... ma attenzione a non confonderli con qualche turista di passaggio con un poncho.

Today, in a continuous merciless rain, we traveled about 200 km northward in the middle of nowhere, with tens of kms without crossing a car in conifer forests, to get to Port McNeill (Northern coast of Vancouver Island) and catch a small ferry to the indian village of Alert Bay, on Cormorant Island: looked like being at the edge of the world.

The small village is inhabited and managed completely by indians of the (almost unpronounceable) Kwakwaka'wakw group, who organise also traditional events and marvelous ritual dances in the summer, but this time of the year just run a small - yet nice - museum and some basic shops, such as a supermarket with included bar/coffee corner, where some locals spend half days chatting, drinking coffee and eating sandwiches and french fries.

There's a beautiful burial site with a number of totem poles... but pay attention, not to mistake for them some passing by tourist with a poncho.
